Get into Dodge.
For some reason, American Airlines seems to occasionally have inexpensive flights to Garden City, Kansas. Hertz in the only car rental in town, and they will wait for the Dallas flight in case it is delayed. Unfortunately they only give you 100 free miles a day, so you can’t do much more than go to Dodge City and back, but it makes a good weekend trip. We stayed at the Hampton Inn, which was Dodge City’s top-rated place on TripAdvisor, and it is right next to the casino. The old Carnegie Library in Dodge is now an arts center with rotating exhibits and special events. Both Garden City and Dodge City have a fair number of bungalows, so architecture fans might enjoy driving around.

The comprehensive Boot Hill Museum includes an exhibit on the show “Gunsmoke.” It’s on Wyatt Earp Blvd.
Because of recent immigration the best food options in town are Mexican, including paletas.
